G1000 / Avionics:
- The G1000 should definitely preset V speeds on the PFD, rather than the manual error-prone process. It has all the necessary information. Sounds good to me! I thought the same thing.
- When entering an airway on a flight plan, the intermediate waypoints are not displayed. When ATC clears you to a later waypoint, the only option is to take out enroute charts and figure out the waypoint manually even though the G1000 knows. Perhaps there could be a manual "Expand / Collapse airway" menu item on the Flight Planning page. I agree. The Garmin 480 does this, but nothing else Garmin does this and should be fixed. I forget though that the 480 wasn't Garmin to start with....
- There is no way to do any "What If?" route planning. On a plane with two separate 430 or 530s, you can use the second to plan alternates for time, fuel or on-course heading / DTK. There is no way using the G1000. You are correct IIRC. This doesn't bug me personally because I usually have a Garmin 496 to play around with that I keep in my flight bag in case of emergency.
- VNAV Planning:
- Show Top of Descent (TOD) distance. Right now, it is shown graphically and by time, not distance.
- Planning +x / -x miles from a waypoint is less intuitive than the 530/430 VNAV planning where plain English "Before / After" is used. Agree. Would be nice and wouldn't be too hard to fix you would think?!
- The METAR graphical display flags are too large, obscuring too much information when zoomed out. Didn't notice.
- EICAS: have more text available for the messages. There are too many obscure messages to memorize. At least allow highlighting an EICAS message and have a "More..." softkey to get an expanded description or suggested action in case an unfamiliar message appears. Obviously significant messages should be memorized by the pilot. Agree with what you are saying, but honestly didn't notice in my 1 hr demo. I didn't notice everything due to the big grin on my face probably. :)
- Why does the "Go-around" button turn on the Flight Director, and the Autopilot FD button turn it off? Couldn't either one flip the state of the FD? Maybe a certification issue? Most planes seem to have a go-around button that does the same thing, so maybe it is a training/what people are used to issue.
- A little tone or beep crossing 18,000' would be useful. I got one better. Change my altimeters automatically climbing through 18,000 and then change it back to the destination altimeter setting based on the Metars. yes, you would still want to check it since it changes, but this would be a good thing overall.
- Checklists should be available on the MFD. Agree! That is one thing I really miss from my Cirrus days. It made me do a better job going through the checklist and I never missed anything like flaps (not that it has ever happened to any of us). :)
Cabin / Comfort:
- Like any modern car, allow cockpit and cabin temperatures to be set by thermostat, rather than manually. The plane has a tendency to get warm during descents. Again, I didn't notice this, but I agree that temp control like a newer car would be convenient
- At least a chemical toilet, instead of just a bag. Anyone have a good source moisture absorbing crystals as found in diapers? There have to be some good aftermarket solutions for this already. I agree. The toilet sucks. Either make it a real working toilet, or give me another seat. I'm not using a bucket and either will my passengers. I can't wait to see a linemans face when he gets handed the bucket when the door opens.... :)
- The cabin has too much plastic, like a mid-market American car, rather than the luxury details you'd expect from a private jet. I agree! The interior looks like a Kia not a BMW. Look at the new TBM 850. Much nicer interior finishes. Yes, I understand the weight thing, but come on Cessna!
Entertainment / XM Radio.
- Passengers should be able to view the current XM channel in addition to changing it. Agree
- Crew should have XM output in the cockpit that is muted automatically by ATC. I agree here as well. I can't believe the cockpit doesn't get XM radio. Cessna needs to wake up and do this. Pilots will retrofit it anyway.
- There should be a external input for an MP3 or DVD audio available in the cabin that would be sent to all cabin headset outputs. Would be nice, but I'm OK with XM alone. My kids bring there one I-pods anyway with their own headsets most of the time.
- Ideally, the XM radio should be detachable for use outside the plane. I disagree here. I hate the portable units and all my vehicles have built-in XM anyway. You can always buy a Garmin 496 that has XM if needed in a rental car for instance.
Public Address:
- A real intercom should be available between crew and at least one cabin area, as found on some Caravans. Agree. I thought this was definitely a cheap move by Cessna.
- The PA button should be a useful cabin announcement via the two cockpit speakers, which are already clearly audible in the cabin. This is worse if passengers are actually using the XM headphone jacks, since there's no way to break in for a PA announcement. Again, I agree. Cessna needs to make the PA system work like other planes.
Headphones:
- Tip power should be sufficient to power other brands of headphones, such as Sennheiser, etc. besides just the Telex. Disagree. I don't think you need any other headset but the Telex. Honestly, I would probably use the mike and no headset.
- LEMO plugs should be added for Bose or other types of powered headphones. Disagree again. Why would you need a Bose headset in a quiet Jet. Sounds like overkill to me.
David, you wanted my opinion, so here it is!

I don't the 496 will let you airway routing. With two 430's, if you get a complex re-route in the air, you can put in all the waypoints in the backup, double check, and when you're set initiate a transfer from backup to main. It's a loss of flexibility that isn't easily addressed in the G1000. Can't have everything I guess. After 4 hrs last week, I still don't like the Telexes. It actually seemed noiser with the Telexes on than just the ambiant cabin - so maybe you're right and ditch the headsets completely. I can't find the reference now, but IIRC some of these single pilot jets require you to wear a headset so you have two free hands.

JoeN: What model Telex are you using? I use the Telex ANR 850 in the 560 and love it. It cuts down all the wind noise, but still lets engine noise through which is a good thing IMO.
The ANR850 that comes with the Mustang, as found in the demo planes. I'm an "around ear" not "over ear" kind of guy. Headsets are a very personal choice.

Joe and David-
Lots of good point, too many to respond to all.
But one jumps out- transition level is not 18,000' everywhere in the world, so were you flying somewhere it's not, having an auto-change at 18,000's could be a bit annoying. I like the idea of the tone, or some other reminder. On the Collins systems in the CJ series, the altimeter setting on the PFD flashed passing through 18,000 or FL180 (going up or down), which is an effective reminder.

On the most updated wish list, I mentioned that it should be beep (or flash) wherever the FL transition altitude is (which could be 9000' or whatever). Look forward to your other comments, -David
